The Georgia Promise Scholarship (SB 233) is a state-funded program designed to give parents more flexibility when choosing how to educate their children. It provides eligible K-12 students with an educational scholarship amount up to $6,500 per student, per academic year. Parents can use these funds to pay for private school tuition, homeschool curriculum, tutoring, or specialized educational therapies.
Who Can Apply for the Scholarship?
To qualify for this program, your student must reside within the attendance zone of a Georgia public school that is currently ranked in the lowest 25% academically statewide. Additionally, your child must be in grades K-12, PreK aged students do not qualify. Anyone who meets the school zone and enrollment criteria can apply, regardless of income. However, if state funding for the program runs out, priority is given to families with household incomes at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, which is approximately $132,000 for a family of four.
Active-duty military families are exempt from the one-year residency requirement. If you have just relocated to a Georgia military installation on PCS orders, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship immediately, provided your housing falls within an eligible school zone.
How the Funds Can Be Spent
Once approved, the $6,500 scholarship is deposited quarterly into a secure, state-managed account. You can spend these funds on a variety of approved educational costs, such as private school fees, textbooks, curriculum materials, and speech or occupational therapies. However, you cannot use these funds for general school supplies like backpacks and paper, and you cannot combine this program with other Georgia state scholarships.
